Ph.D. thesis (2009 - present). Knowledge and Doubt: Plato, the Stoics and Augustine
I examine what Plato (ch.1), the Stoics (chs. 2 and 3) and Augustine (chs. 4 and 5) took knowledge to be, and, in the case of the Stoics and Augustine, how they responded to sceptical critiques. In particular I examine whether they held that knowledge is (e.g.) justified true belief, whether their notions of knowledge are internalist or externalist in character, what kind of mental state they took knowledge to be, and examine the success of their knowledge claims against various forms of sceptical attacks.
