About
My current research examines the life cycle of a best-selling and controversial work of nineteenth-century popular scholarship: Ernest Renan's "Vie de Jésus" (Life of Jesus, 1863). I am concerned with the book's role in intellectual history, its shifting position in French cultural politics and its importance to the individual men and women who read it. My interests include the role of religion in periods of apparent secularisation, the social history of ideas and the history of reading.
