About

After completing a BMus(I) in Music at Lancaster University, I have continued to study for an MPhil in Musicology at the University of Cambridge. During this time I have developed an interest in the analysis of popular music and the presentation of scholarly work. As an interdisciplinary student, my main research interest crosses computational and musicological boundaries as I consider the development of digital technologies and 'web 2.0'.

Currently I am researching two different but related areas for my dissertation. First, I want to develop an analytical model that can be used to create a foundation of research for little-known research areas, for example, Untraditional Folk Music (UTF). I then want to develop this online. In order to do this, I am also researching the optimum way to present the analysis digitally, through visual learning (radial mapping and linear technique) and through a kinaesthetic approach (like interactive white board programs).

Although a four or five year project, within my masters year I am focussing on creating an appropriate musicological analytic framework that tackles several well known issues in the field of popular musicology. Moreover, I have begun through concept designs and through the application of Mediawiki software to explore ways to present the collaborative analysis.

In the future, I would like to work in online web design and computer programming (specialising in java and learning about .css and .php).

Further application avenues involve the use of these types of software for disability learning (in particular for students with dyslexia) and producing a generic software for creating online collaborative communities that are of a scholary standard and defined by materials affiliated with the term 'web 2.0'.
