Thesis Title: American Civil Liberties and the defence of the unpopular, 1947-1969

About

I am a PhD candidate in American History at the University of Cambridge, supervised by Professor Tony Badger.

Research interests

Twentieth century American political and social history, with specific interests in the civil liberties and civil rights revolutions, and the Cold War, communism and anti-communism.

Current research

My doctoral dissertation is expected to be completed in summer 2012. It analyses civil liberties organisations' defence of unpopular groups during the early Cold War. Research questions include the extent to which civil liberties groups maintained their commitment to non-partisan defence of the unpopular across the political spectrum, from Communists to Nazis, during the early Cold War. I will delineate how civil liberties groups articulated and maintained a distinction between their group commitment to non-partisanship and strong individual support for social and political causes including the civil rights and anti-war movements.
