About
I study early medieval history. Most of my work focusses on northern Britain (in particular Scotland and Wales) between the late-Roman period and the tenth century. I specialise in the use of literary and pseudo-historical materials, havingĀ written extensively on whether later texts such as 'Y Gododdin' or the 'Historia Brittonum' qualify as evidence for the post-Roman North. Other subjects I am interested in include the Picts, place-names and topography, the archaeology and interrelationships of 'high status' settlements and the impact of the Roman inheritance. An area of research I have moved into more recently is that of historical geography, especially the impact of geomorphology on frontiers and landscapes of power.
I am currently engaged in both lecturing and supervising undergraduates at the department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, University of Cambridge. To date I have lectured on the Pictish kingdoms, 300-900, and on the North Britons, as well as supervising on a range of topics including the kingdom of Strathclyde, medieval Welsh politics and the vikings in Brittany.
I also write more widely on landscapes and landscape history, literature, mountaineering, travel and the sea.
