About

Monique Ingalls is an ethnomusicologist and Postdoctoral Fellow in Popular Music & Culture at the University of Cambridge. Her PhD dissertation (University of Pennsylvania 2008) explores how evangelical Christians use congregational worship music to negotiate individual and communal identities. Recent articles include a study of transnational connections between Anglophone Christian media industries; an overview of international genres of Christian and gospel music; an exploration of how music unites imagined and eschatological communities at conference pilgrimage sites; and a theorization of how spiritual practices and popular music performance overlap within evangelical worship concerts. Work forthcoming and under review includes an article in the journal Ethnomusicology; entries in the Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World; and edited collections on music in world Christianity and music and multimedia.

Monique is currently working on an ethnographic project that explores how religious popular music is used to claim public space and to navigate religious and ethnic difference in Toronto-area Christian parades and festivals. She is co-editor, with Amos Yong, of a volume on music in Pentecostalism. Monique is also co-founder and co-chair of the Society for Ethnomusicology's Sacred/Religious Music Special Interest Group and the co-organizer of the conference "Christian Congregational Music: Local and Global Perspectives" to be held at Ripon College Cuddeson, Oxford in September 2011.
