About
My current research focuses on Anglo-German relations in the 1970s and early 1980s, with special emphasis on Helmut Schmidt’s life and career. Apart from providing the first archive-based study for this period, this PhD project uses the biographical prism to place greater emphasis on the 'soft factors' and cultural dimensions influencing bilateral relations, an area so often overlooked in traditional diplomatic history. At its heart lies the question of why a Chancellor so steeped in Anglophilia became best known for strengthening the Franco-German axis.
My wider interests include post-war international relations (especially the Cold War and European Integration), 'Britain and Europe', and British and German History since 1945. My MPhil thesis investigated the popular press's debate over Britain's first application to join the EEC in 1961-3.
