Thesis Title: What is "Yayoi"? isotopic investigations into diet and social stratification over the Jomon-Yayoi transition in western Japan

Tamsin O'Connell
Martin Jones

About

I am interested in pre-modern (both historic and prehistoric) Japanese diet. For my PhD, I used stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis to investigate dietary change and social stratification over the Jomon-Yayoi transition in western Japan.
Currently, I am a post-doctoral researcher for the Baikal-Hokkaido Archaeology Project (affiliated with the Institute of Archaeology in Oxford) using macrobotanical remains to explore questions of plant use by hunter-gatherers in northern Japan. In particular, I am considering the role of cereals.
