About
Helen Roche is currently researching a PhD in Classics at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, under the supervision of Paul Cartledge and Robin Osborne.
The basic subject of her thesis concerns the influence of ideas of Sparta in German education, particularly in elite schools, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Her two case studies are the Prussian Cadet-Schools and the Nationalpolitischen Erziehungsanstalten (Napolas). She was recently awarded scholarships from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) and the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz for archival research in Germany, and will submit her thesis in the next couple of months. The thesis is subsequently to be published as a monograph by the Classical Press of Wales.
An edited version of Helen's MPhil thesis, entitled 'The Importance of Sparta in the Educational Ideology of the Adolf Hitler Schools' will be published later this month in 'Sparta in Modern Thought' (ed. Stephen Hodkinson, Ian MacGregor Morris), Swansea.
Other research interests include:
- the influence of philhellenism on the thought of National Socialist ideologues.
- historical and historiographical work on elements of Spartan history.
- more general research on German elite education
