My PhD thesis is based on an analysis of the competing philosophical schools within neoliberalism. It is my contention that there is a clear divide between the libertarian and authoritarian variants of neoliberal ideology (centring on the work of Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek respectively). I go on to argue that libertarian neoliberalism is a political irrelevance, developing the notion of Hayekianism as the key activist ideology that was able to take control of key government centres during the Cold War and was central to shaping the globalised order we live in today. In order to defend this contention I apply the theoretical analysis of neoliberal ideology to the governments of General Pinochet and Mrs Thatcher. I seek to demonstrate that these administrations were both dominated by a hard core of "Hayekians" who were able to project there ideas well beyond the period of their direct rule.
