Thesis Title: Symbols and Landscapes. The meaning of Sardinian Nuraghi through Time and Space

John Robb

About

My main research interest is Landscape Archaeology.
In particular, I am interested in the way Space is socially structured in a specific landscape through the study of relations of the elements that constitute it through time, and the perception individuals and groups had of such relations, which are social and natural at the same time, and involve economy, gender, social groups, ritual and every other aspect which can be categorised.

For daily relations in a landscape are expressed physically in movement and vision,I utilise GIS approaches in order to simulate and analyse simulations on past views and paths.

Currently I am undertaking a research on Sardinian nuraghi for my PhD,
the aim of which is to investigate the presence and the nature of ‘meaning’ - social, functional, experiential - of these monuments as active agents in the relationship between human communities and their landscape.

In the meantime, I am co-leading a regional survey project in Western-Central coastal Sardinia (Capo Mannu Project) and collecting data and experiences from other archaeological landscapes in the World - mostly islands - through private travels and participations in official projects (Menorca, Orkney, Corsica).

Finally, I am also interested in both behavioural and historical approaches to the study of prehistoric pottery and lithics artefacts, especially in the Western Mediterranean area.
