Thesis Title: Writing on Archaic Athenian Pottery. Studies on the Relationship between Images and Inscriptions on Greek Vases
About
A Classical archaeologist by training (see below), I have recently finished my doctoral dissertation on the relationship between inscriptions on Greek (mainly Athenian) pots and the images in (rather than on, I would argue) which they are painted.
My research interests cover the whole range of Classical Archaeology, with a particular focus so far on iconography (from Geometric Greece through Etruria to late-antique Rome, from pots and paintings to reliefs and sculpture in the round), historical topography (especially Rome and Pompeii), reception (particularly early collections of antiquities, especially in England) and theory (in particular visual analysis, the relationship between images and text, and the ethics of collecting and the art market). I have also enjoyed a limited degree of archaeological fieldwork in Italy and Turkey, where I developed an interest in the ethical dimensions of excavations, especially dealing with human remains and interactions with the local population.
My first academic degree is a Magister Artium in Classical Archaeology (major subject), Greek Philology and Ancient History (minor subjects) from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, studied for between 2001 and 2007.
