About
Casey Brienza is a doctoral researcher in sociology at the University of Cambridge and member of Trinity College, Cambridge. She received her AB from Mount Holyoke College in 2003 and her MA from New York University's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication in 2009. Between her first and second degrees she was a Fulbright Fellow to South Korea. Casey's doctoral thesis, fully funded by an External Research Studentship from her College, is currently being written up under the supervision of John B. Thompson on manga publishing and the transnational production of print culture.
Her peer-reviewed articles are published or forthcoming in The Journal of Popular Culture, LOGOS, Publishing Research Quarterly, Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, and The International Journal of the Book. She has received student paper awards from the Japan-U.S. Communication Association and The New Jersey Project on Inclusive Scholarship, Curriculum and Teaching.
One of the most well-known manga experts in the United States, Casey has also worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, and critic in this context. Since 2005, she has published over a thousand professional writings with Anime Insider, Otaku USA, Protoculture Addicts, Anime News Network, Graphic Novel Reporter, among others.
