Thesis Title: The Pagan Oracles in Early Modern Thought
About
Currently working on Sir Thomas Browne's manuscript notebooks at the British Library, in preparation for a new edition of Browne's Complete Works, still inchoate.
My first book, "The Devil's Tabernacle: The Pagan Oracles in Early Modern Thought", based on my doctoral thesis, has recently been accepted for publication by Princeton UP, to be out next year.
In the meantime, outside professional hours, am working on a) the use of metaphor in Thomas Emes's "Vindiciae Mentis" (1702), a critique of William Coward's mortalism; b) a piece on early modern failures to understand Biblical style; and possibly, pending a green light, c) a book chapter on utopianism in the designs of 1960s English university campuses.
